How I Get a Good Night Sleep

Books on bed with sleep spray and fitbit

One of my favourites things to do is to sleep. Unfortunately, as much as I'd like to do it more often throughout the day, I can't because I have to work and for some reason, it's frowned upon to nap at your desk. So getting a good night sleep is pretty important to me otherwise, I'm extremely grumpy and hate life. I know a lot of people struggle to get to sleep on time, I used to but I'm not too bad anymore. Once I'm in bed, I'm out most of the time. So I thought I'd share a few tips with you guys that I tend to use to get a good night sleep.

Recently I've been getting into bed about nine and I'm usually asleep by ten. I know, that's pretty early... but it's because I've been getting up a lot earlier in the morning as I've found that I'm more productive when I do. So I always try to make sure that I'm getting a good night sleep, to make it easier to get up. I will write a post on becoming a morning person soon too, I just want to make sure I stick to it first before I offer advice.

Three books on bed

I absolutely love reading, unfortunately, it usually makes me really sleepy, so if I read throughout the day it makes me want to crawl into bed and nap. So I tend to read a bit before bed instead of watching TV or spending far too long on Twitter which is a really bad habit. Apparently, it's advised not to have any screen time at least two hours before you go to bed as it can have an effect on your sleep. Due to the light that they emit, screens can prevent our brains from "winding down" for sleep. You can read more about that here as I am no pro.

So a good alternative is to read a bit before bed, or maybe even listen to a podcast. I also use the Calm app sometimes before bed if I find that I can't focus on reading because my brain just won't relax. The Calm app is a great app for meditating and also has different soundtracks you can listen to that help you sleep

These are the books that I'm loving at the moment and yes, I'm reading multiple books at a time because sometimes I want to read something motivational and sometimes I want to read a good story.

Sleep Plus pillow spray and balm

These little gems were a gift from Rosie for my birthday. I'd been complaining that I wasn't sleeping very well so she thought these might help and she was right. These two have now become a must-have for me as I find that they really help me relax and get a good night sleep. You probably don't need both of them, but I do use both. I'm not a fan of lavender at all but I'm okay with the scent of these.

The pillow spray gradually releases it's aromatherapeutic benefits as you sleep, helping you wake up feeling and looking refreshed.

As for the balm, this helps more with nerves. You dab it on your pulse points and it helps calm your nerves ready for a good night sleep. It is also moisturising so you can use it on dry patches of skin.

Fitbit Flex and IPhone

I find that my FitBit is the best way to track my sleep and it's also the best way for me to know when to go to sleep. You can set silent alarms on your Fitbit to remind you when to go to bed.
I have an alarm set in the evening to tell me when I need to start getting ready for bed, otherwise, I lose track of time and before I know it it's eleven O'clock at night.

I also use my Fitbit to wake me up in the morning too. Alarms that make noise just annoy me and wake me up in a bad mood. But the Fitbit vibrates and doesn't make a noise, making it the perfect alternative.

Those are the main things that help me get to sleep, but other things that help are;

  •  Having dinner at least two hours before I go to bed.
  • Sticking to a schedule so my body knows when it's bedtime.
  • Try to keep my steps up on my Fitbit so I'm getting a bit of exercise.
  • Give my room a quick tidy before bed, it helps me feel less stressed.

I hope these help you get the sleep you crave! They might not work for everyone, but they work for me so I thought I'd share them. Do you have any tips or tricks on getting a good night sleep? Let me know in the comments.
